Checking elevation

Unlock the full set of features for topo, set-out, and as-built surveys

This guide explains how to check the current ground elevation and grade an area to a specified elevation using the Stake elevation feature in Emlid Flow.

Overview

Construction projects require grading an area to a specific target elevation within an acceptable tolerance. The target elevation is the required height of the finished ground relative to the project’s vertical datum. The tolerance defines how much the actual ground elevation can differ from the target and still be considered on grade.

With the Stake elevation feature in Emlid Flow, you can check the ground elevation by entering the target elevation and tolerance. As you move around the area, Cut/Fill and color feedback show whether the ground is within tolerance and how much material needs to be added or removed.

note

If you want to check the elevation of a particular object, stake out a point or line instead.

Use this workflow for the following tasks:

  • During grading, use the Cut/Fill value to determine whether material needs to be removed or added to reach the target elevation.
  • After grading, check the area to confirm that the ground is within the required tolerance and identify spots that need rework.

Workflow

To check if the area is at the required elevation:

  1. Open the Emlid Flow app and connect to your Reach.

  2. Go to the Survey tab and open or import a project.

    tip

To learn how to import a project, check the Create or import project guide.

  3. Set the pole height. By default, this parameter is set to 1.8m.

    note

If you work with Reach RS4 / RS4 Pro or Reach RX2, enable the quick release if you use one.

  4. On the Survey screen, tap the elevation value in the bottom status chip.

  5. Enter the design height to set the target elevation and set the vertical tolerance according to your project requirements, then tap Start stakeout.

  6. Move around the area and watch the color-coded cut/fill feedback: red means cut, gray means fill, and green means you’re within the specified tolerance. If you find a spot that is out of tolerance, mark it on the ground and add or remove material as needed.

tip

If you want to change the design height or vertical tolerance values during work, tap the Edit button in the upper-right corner and adjust the values as needed.

You can now verify that the area meets the required grade and identify any spots that need adjustment.
