Navigating in the field with Mobile location

Unlock the full set of features for topo, set-out, and as-built surveys

This guide shows you how to use your phone's location to navigate to locations in your project in Emlid Flow.

Overview

The mobile location feature in Emlid Flow allows you to use your phone's built-in location services to navigate around the job site when a GNSS receiver isn't available or when survey-grade accuracy isn't required. When using the Mobile location feature, Emlid Flow displays your approximate position on the project map, with a typical accuracy of 1–3 m under good outdoor conditions, and Wi-fi enabled.

Mobile location uses your phone's built-in location services to determine your position. To use this feature, enable precise location services on your phone.

To achieve the best possible positioning accuracy for your device, we recommend the following:

  • Use a smartphone with dual-frequency GNSS support.
  • Stay in an open area with a clear view of the sky.
  • Keep Wi-Fi enabled.

Enable Mobile location

To enable mobile location in Emlid Flow, do the following:

  1. Enable Wi-Fi on your mobile device. We recommend keeping it enabled even when you're not connected to a Wi-Fi network. This allows your phone to use nearby Wi-Fi networks to improve positioning, especially in areas with limited sky visibility, such as near buildings.

  2. Open Emlid Flow and go to the Profiles tab and tap Settings.

  3. Go to App settings and enable Mobile location.

  4. When prompted, allow Emlid Flow to access your device's precise location. Location data is used only in real time and is not stored or transmitted to our servers.

  5. Once it is enabled, go to the Receivers tab and choose Mobile location as your receiver.

  6. Open your project and see your approximate position on the project map while navigating the site.

You can now use Mobile location to navigate in the fields using your device's built-in location until you're ready for higher-accuracy positioning.
