How to enable tilt compensation on rover
This guide shows how to enable and use tilt compensation on your Reach RS3 rover.
Overview
With IMU tilt compensation, you can collect and stake out points with the survey pole tilted and still get accurate results. The software will calculate the tilt angle and the tilt distance and determine the position of the pole tip on the ground.
Workflow
Start working with tilt compensation
-
If this is the first time you're using Reach RS3 as a rover with tilt compensation, the IMU sensors are already enabled and you'll see the onboarding series, which covers the main steps of working with tilt compensation when you connect to the receiver. If necessary, you can check the tilt compensation onboarding again on the Receiver info screen.
-
If the IMU sensors are not enabled, go to Settings, tap IMU, and turn on them.
To start using tilt compensation on your Reach RS3, follow the steps below:
-
Open the Emlid Flow app.
-
Connect to your Reach RS3.
-
Set up RTK connection and wait for FIX.
tipCheck the following guides to confgire receiving corrections on your Reach RS3 rover:
-
Once you've got FIX, watch the tilt compensation status in the Status bar. Once initialization is complete, you will need to rotate the receiver or simply walk with it for a few seconds until you hear the notification sound and see the message indicating that the tilt compensation is ready.
You are now ready to proceed with GNSS data measurement.
Collect data with tilt compensation
Tilt compensation can only be applied if you have the FIX solution.
To collect data with tilt compensation, do the following:
-
Go to the Survey tab and open or create a project.
-
Tap the Plus button to open the Collector menu.
-
Collect the point.
tipTap Status bar, to learn more about tilt compensation. The Status overview has a section with the information about the tilt angle and heading.
Once you collect the point with tilt compensation, it will have the information about the heading and angle of the tilt compensation. You can continue collecting points.
For points collected using averaging, only the maximum tilt compensation angle is specified.
Stake out data with tilt compensation
To stake out data with tilt compensation, do the following:
-
Open the Emlid Flow app and connect to your Reach.
-
Go to the Survey tab and open or import a project.
-
Tap the List button to choose the point you want to stake out. You can also select the point directly on the map.
tipThe selected point will be highlighted in blue on the map.
-
Tap the Stake out button.
-
Move your Reach in the direction of the point. When you get closer, the map zooms in automatically.
noteTurn the LED panel of the receiver towards you while surveying. This way you will see the correct direction and navigate easily on the map. This is applied only when IMU is on.
-
Move your Reach so that the bull’s-eye turns green, showing that your Reach is less than 2.5 cm (0.08 ft) away from the point you are staking out.
-
Physically mark the point’s position on the ground.
-
Switch to another point by tapping the arrow buttons in the Stakeout navigation area.
tipTo finish staking out the point, close the Stakeout option window.
Turning off tilt compensation
If you don't need tilt compensation anymore, you can turn it off in two ways:
-
You can temporarily turn tilt compensation option off in the Survey settings on the Collector screen. For the Collector tool, this is available only when you use the FIX only option in the Survey settings.
-
If you don't need tilt compensation at all, you can disable the IMU sensors. To do this, go to Settings, tap IMU and turn them off.
